The State of Texas will submit a bid to become the headquarters for an advanced battery consortium that is seeking $1 billion in Federal stimulus money to develop technology for the next generation of hybrid electric vehicles. Statesman.com. Initial funding would come from money provided by ARRA 2009 ( earlier post ).

GE, which has recently launched a battery business, has now announced plans to open a manufacturing plant in upstate New York. The plant will produce around 10million sodium-metal halide cells each year, which is enough to support 1,000 GE hybrid locomotives. The GE locomotives are scheduled to be commercialised in 2010.
