GM will introduce a strong hybrid version of the next-generation Malibu. Using technology from the 2016 Chevrolet Volt propulsion system ( earlier post ), Malibu Hybrid will offer an estimated combined fuel economy rating exceeding 45 mpg (5.22 Additional fuel economy benefits come from Exhaust Gas Recirculation, or EGR.

EPA released the latest edition of its annual report on trends in CO 2 emissions, fuel economy and powertrain technology for new personal vehicles in the US. mpg increase over the previous year and an increase of nearly 5 mpg since 2004. With alternative fuel vehicles now approaching 1% of new vehicle production, however, they are in fact beginning to have a “ measurable and meaningful impact ” on overall new vehicle fuel economy and CO 2 emissions. GM is applying a new advanced valvetrain technology on the Ecotec 2.5L GM estimates the fuel savings at up to one mile per gallon, according to Mike Anderson, GM global chief engineer for Ecotec engines. It is the first of its kind for low-friction roller-type finger-follower valvetrains in gasoline engines, GM says.

On 11 August, GM invited approximately 75 journalists and auto analysts to spend a day learning about the new GM. The day was split between a morning session at the GM tech center in Warren and an afternoon session at the GM proving grounds in Milford, MI.
