The Velite 5, Buick’s first extended-range electric vehicle, made its global debut in Shanghai today. The Velite 5 features GM’s proven EVT electronic controlled intelligent variable transmission. Within his talk about the need for a US energy policy at the IHS CERAWeek 2013 energy conference in Houston, GM Chairman and CEO Dan Akerson outlined some highlights of the company’s fuel economy plan through the 2016 model year. GM, said Akerson, is doing a much better job optimizing mass efficiency. Clean diesel.

Fletcher is responsible for the Extended Range Electric Vehicle propulsion system in the Chevrolet Volt as well as the propulsion systems in GM’s upcoming line-up of Plug-In Hybrid Elecrtic Vehicles. GM estimates it will save a driver of a larger car about $1,850 a year in fuel.

GM has made three product commitments for 2017 related to its sustainability strategy: to have 500,000 vehicles on the road in the US with some form of electrification ( earlier post ); to double the number of US models that can achieve an EPA-estimated 40 mpg US (5.9 In 2012, GM invested more than $7.3 Earlier post.).

The result is that the engine dynamically fires the optimal number of cylinders to maximize fuel economy while maintaining a smooth ride with commercial levels of noise and vibration. Because each combustion event is selected to allow optimal efficiency, DSF reduces fuel and CO 2 , and for diesel applications, NO x emissions.

On 11 August, GM invited approximately 75 journalists and auto analysts to spend a day learning about the new GM. The day was split between a morning session at the GM tech center in Warren and an afternoon session at the GM proving grounds in Milford, MI. GM’s identify in the US starts with its four core brands.

Over the next five years, GM will introduce more than 60 new models and major product upgrades. From Chevrolet will come 15 new models and upgrades, which will range from affordable small cars to midsize sedans. Later this year, GM China will offer the Chevrolet Volt extended-range electric vehicle.
