Universal Hydrogen completes first taxi tests; granted experimental airworthiness certificate by FAA; Air New Zealand agreement

Universal Hydrogen was granted a special airworthiness certificate in the experimental category by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to proceed with the first flight of its hydrogen-powered regional aircraft. The Dash 8-300 flying testbed has a megawatt-class hydrogen fuel cell powertrain installed in one of its nacelles.

The airplane, nicknamed Lightning McClean, took off at 8:41am PST from Grant County International Airport (KMWH) and flew for 15 minutes, reaching an altitude of 3,500 MSL. The airplanes are converted to hydrogen using an aftermarket retrofit conversion kit, tackling the existing fleet rather than developing a brand new airplane.

Bosch testing fuel cell vans using its own fuel cell components

The partner in the project is ABT eLine GmbH, which designed and converted the vehicles together with Bosch Engineering GmbH. After the required technical tests, the vehicles were granted official approval for road use. Bosch has equipped two vans with hydrogen fuel cell technology and started test operation on the road.
