UQM PowerPhase Pro 100 electric drive systems are powering a fleet of hydrogen fuel cell London taxicabs during the 2012 Olympic Games. A fuel cell system designed by Intelligent Energy works in conjunction with a high voltage battery pack and a UQM DC-to-DC converter to provide power for the vehicle.

The energy is drawn from the flywheel and converted back into electricity to power the traction motor, which helps accelerate the bus back up to speed, generating fuel savings of more than 20% at a significantly lower cost and weight (60 kg, 132 lbs) than battery hybrid alternatives. When the driver accelerates, the system works in reverse.
