Researchers virtually ‘unwind’ lithium battery; strategies for improving design of cylindrical cells

Green Car Congress

An international team led by researchers at UCL has revealed new insights into the workings of a commercial Li/MnO 2 primary battery by virtually “unrolling” its coil of electrode layers using an algorithm designed for papyrus scrolls. Unseen trends in the spatial distribution of performance in the cells were observed.

Japan team evaluates battery-assisted low-cost hydrogen production from solar energy

Green Car Congress

For comparison, the US DOE’s 2020 target for the levelized cost of hydrogen (production only) is $2.30/kg. The joint research team designed an integrated system capable of adjusting the amount of battery charge/discharge and the amount of electrolysis hydrogen production in relation to the amount of solar power generated. to US$3.00/kg

Ricardo develops new model-based EV battery control technology; evaluating new cell chemistries

Green Car Congress

One of the most significant impediments to an increased market share for plug-in vehicles is the high cost of rechargeable energy storage. This can represent a very significant cost element of a typical battery electric vehicle (BEV); manufacturers need to strike a balance between product affordability and available range between recharges.
