NREL researchers capture excess photon energy to produce solar fuels; higher efficiency water-splitting for H2

Green Car Congress

Using quantum dots (QD) and a process called Multiple Exciton Generation (MEG), the NREL researchers were able to push the peak external quantum efficiency for hydrogen generation to 114%. Photogenerated holes oxidize sulfide in one compartment while electrons reduce hydrogen in the other compartment at the dark Pt cathode.

Amyris processes Ceres sweet sorghum into renewable diesel using soluble and cellulosic sugars

Green Car Congress

The DOE’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), at its Colorado pilot-scale biochemical conversion facility, converted the biomass from Ceres’ hybrids into cellulosic sugars, which Amyris subsequently fermented into renewable farnesene. Amyris modifies farnesene to become renewable diesel. than 80%.
