Study finds methane emissions from coal mines ~50% higher than previously thought

Green Car Congress

The amount of methane released into the atmosphere as a result of coal mining is likely approximately 50% higher than previously estimated, according to research presented at the recent annual meeting of the American Geophysical Union. The authors point out that less coal production doesn’t translate to less methane.

gas hydrate accumulations in ocean sediments and permafrost—escapes. Their findings, published online 29 August in the AGU Journal of Geophysical Research , also suggest that methane trapped under the ocean may already be escaping through vents in the sea floor at a much faster rate than previously believed. Global Carbon Project reports global CO2 emissions suddenly on the rise after 3-year hiatus; need for reducing uncertainties

Green Car Congress

High-accuracy calibrated atmospheric measurements, diverse satellite data, and integrative modelling approaches could, and ultimately must, provide independent evidence of the effectiveness of collective action to address climate change. Increases in coal use in China and the US are expected this year, reversing their decreases since 2013.

JetBlue to go carbon neutral on all domestic flights by offsetting emissions starting in 2020; flying with SAF from SFO

Green Car Congress

JetBlue will continue to partner with Carbonfund.org—a leading US-based nonprofit carbon reduction and climate solutions organization. Instead of escaping into the air, LFG can be captured, converted and used as a renewable energy resource. Since 2008, JetBlue has already offset more than 2.6

Study finds urban waste heat affects temperatures across thousands of miles, warming some areas and cooling others

Green Car Congress

However, the noticeable impact on regional temperatures may explain why some regions are experiencing more winter warming than projected by climate computer models, the researchers conclude. Human energy consumption distributes energy that had lain dormant and sequestered for millions of years, mostly in the form of oil or coal.

Using the PHEV (Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle) to Transition Society Seamlessly and Profitably From Fossil Fuel to 100% Renewable Energy

Green Car Congress

It offers the solution to several significant transitions we need: moving society from burning fossil fuels to substituting renewable resource fuels such as solar, wind and biofuels; and from using fossil materials as fuel to using them for other recyclable uses. It is much more than that.
