I've already added the 3-hole cap-plug provided in the kit. After cutting all the tape that bound the engine compartment cables together, I slid on the three-hole cap-plug from the kit and bonded it in place with silicone sealant. The next task is to connect the wire ends of these two cables to the front and rear parts of the car.

The PakTrakr consists of several serially connect "remotes" which drive a "display" unit in the driver compartment. I also put dielectric grease on the connections to see if that would help with corrosion and connectivity. This is not a critical part of the car, but it would be nice to measure the state of the batteries.

I thought briefly about purchasing a car that got better gas mileage, but it made sense first to see how much fuel economy I could eek out from the aging econobox I am now driving: a 1991 Toyota Corolla. Many newer cars show instantaneous fuel consumption on the dash. But my car was manufactured years before OBD-II became standard.

After studying the AC kit diagrams and reading the motor controller documentation from Azure Dynamics, I think I understand a little better what all these relays and terminal strips are for. To allow enough room for wire connections and put the pieces in roughly the right place, I had to angle some of them. I think that's it for today.

A few people asked me about how I hacked together a serial port since AC kit people will need this in order to configure the controller correctly. To connect to the PC, I got a female DB9 connector with solder cups. All connections were soldered to solder cups in the top row. Here it is, removed from the car.

What this really means is that you need to mount the rack EXACTLY 2 1/2" in front of the wall so components on the front of the rack don't hit other parts of the car. I suspect I hooked up something wrong and will reverse engineer the connections next. Also, the instructions for the DC kit may not apply to the AC kit.

As I mentioned before, I'm replacing the #2 gauge cable provided in the kit with a thicker 2/0 welding cable. I'm still a cheapskate and will still use the #2 gauge lugs with 5/16" holes provided in the kit. Fortunately, I used Noalox on all subsequent crimp connections.

Here are the negative high-voltage connections. The dangling white and green wire go to the ammeter shunt and the dangling black wire I think is not used in the AC kit. I was also able to turn on the CD player and it started playing the CD I had left in there from when the car had a gasoline (yuck!) The moment of truth!

I recently sent off an e-mail to Azure Dynamics, the maker of the DMOC445 AC motor controller in the 914 kit. If so, do you sell a device that I can connect to them? If an LED is connected to it, a current limiting resistor is needed. Not active Do the amp-hour counter input/outputs work? Do the BRAKE_PEDAL,BRAKE_LO inputs work?

I received an updated wiring diagram for the AC kit from ElectroAuto, and, much to my disappointment, many of the connections went between the battery caps. The updated low-voltage wiring diagram shows different connections in the front compartment. Note the thick welding cable coming into the box from the rear of the car.

I finally got to work on the electric car again today. Here is the 9-in-1 wire for the AC kit pulled through the grommet between the passenger compartment and the fuel compartment. The yellow and brown wire need to come out of the flexwrap so that we can connect them to circuits in the front luggage compartment.

Today, I installed the last kit piece that I have from Electro Automotive: the motor controller wiring harness. Here's the wiring harness crimped and connected to the terminal blocks. At least this gives me an idea of what connections I'm dealing with. This made the installation much easier.
