The BMW i3 was the BMW Group’s first purely electrically powered large-scale serial model and also the company’s first vehicle with a passenger cell made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP). It is shaped in Leipzig from carbon fiber scrims and assembled in a unique process developed by the BMW Group.

Like the i8 coupé concept, the BMW i8 Concept Spyder with eDrive is a plug-in hybrid. The front and rear axle modules are connected by an “energy tunnel”, which houses the battery pack. Connectivity. The LifeDrive architecture also has been adapted to the sports car character of the BMW i8 Concept Spyder.

Uni-Chassis is a simple design made up of three basic elements: a front structure that utilizes a stressed engine to take suspension loads; a rear structure that utilizes the transaxle as a structural component; and, most importantly, the connection of front and rear structures by a structural tubular backbone that doubles as the torque tube.
