One of GM’s goals in developing the Volt was to create a plug-in electric vehicle suitable for everyday use regardless of weather. Typical northern winters take an even bigger toll on battery-powered vehicles than on traditional internal combustion-powered cars and trucks.

Amidst the well-deserved hoopla about GM's plug-in serial hybrid Chevy Volt , Ford is touting its own equally ugly plug-in hybrid concept car. GM's vehicle is eminently buildable today, as it relies on two energy sources that are available: grid electricity and gasoline. Ford makes no pretense of its intention not to produce its car.

Although electric vehicles have lower tailpipe emissions than gasoline powered vehicles, the changes in emissions associated with vehicle electrification on a life cycle basis will depend on the emissions associated with the operations of the power plants used to charge the battery.
