Be careful listening to self-anointed experts that owning a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) is not a wise choice or viable option when buying a new car. Those truly in the know have real world knowledge of why a PHEV is the perfect bridge between a gasoline-powered car and one propelled by only electricity.

Among electric vehicles from automakers that report specific sales numbers for their EV models, the Toyota RAV4 Prime PHEV was tops in the US in 2021 with 27,3707 units sold. Another top-selling EV beyond Tesla models that is not included is the Jeep Wrangler 4xe PHEV, which likely saw 2021 sales of between 20,000-25,000.

The obvious next step after creating a popular RAV4 PHEV would be stepping up to an all-electric version.

I was at the end of a 3-year lease and a 6-month extension on my 2018 Chevrolet Volt Plug-in Hybrid. Its second oil change was forced as part of the hand-over from the dealer. The only other visits to the dealer were for software updates that had minimal impact before or after. Road Test: 2019 Chevrolet Volt.
