The 2017 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid has a somewhat deceptive—or perhaps incomplete—name. It is in fact a plug-in hybrid, making it the first minivan equipped with that type of powertrain to go into production. It is also the first mass-market plug-in vehicle sold by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) in all 50 states of the U.S.

Chrysler’s Town & Country was one of the first minivan on the market when it arrived in 1989 as a spinoff of the original Dodge Caravan, and its mix of practicality and near-premium status did a lot to boost the segment.

Chrysler last week revealed the completely new sixth-generation version of its minivans—including, at long last, the first full-hybrid minivan for the U.S. That model, to be called the 2017 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, is slated to go on sale around September 2016.
