Preliminary data in EPA’s 2020 Automotive Trends Report shows average fuel economy for model year 2020 light-duty vehicles increased to 25.7 If this preliminary data holds, that will be a new record high for average new light-duty vehicle fuel economy. From 2005–2020 average fuel economy rose by 29%.

In a new report, researchers at the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) have calculated the actual, on-road fuel economy for the entire fleet of all vehicles in the US, and for different classes of vehicles, with primary interest in light-duty vehicles (cars, pickup trucks, vans, and SUVs), between 1923 and 2013.

The SAFE-1 action withdrew the 2013 Clean Air Act (CAA) waiver that had allowed California to enforce its greenhouse gas (GHG) standards for cars and light-duty trucks and its zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) sales mandate. EPA plans to propose this rule in July 2021. Background.

With alternative fuel vehicles now approaching 1% of new vehicle production, however, they are in fact beginning to have a “ measurable and meaningful impact ” on overall new vehicle fuel economy and CO 2 emissions.
