Converting Coal Power Plants to Nuclear Gains Steam

Cars That Think

Department of Energy (DOE) released a report suggesting that, in theory, over 300 former and present coal power plants could be converted to nuclear. Such a conversion has never been done, but the report is another sign that the idea is gaining momentum—if with the slow steps of a baby needing decades to learn to walk. “A

Panasonic develops highly efficient artificial photosynthesis system with gallium nitride semiconductor for conversion of CO2 to formic acid

Green Car Congress

Panasonic has developed an artificial photosynthesis system using a gallium nitride photoelectrode and a metal catalyst which uses sunlight to convert CO 2 mainly to formic acid (an important intermediate in chemical synthesis) at an efficiency (solar energy to chemical energy) of 0.2%—a Click to enlarge. Volkswagen 2.0 TDI diesel for Euro 6d; SCR twin-dosing

Green Car Congress

The four-cylinder TDI engine with the internal designation EA 288 made its debut in 2012. Volkswagen opted for a dual strategy: detailed measures optimized the combustion process and reduced raw emissions, while twin dosing technology in the exhaust gas system converted the majority of NO x into harmless substances.

Sulfur as a promising “soft” oxidant for conversion of methane to ethylene

Green Car Congress

Devising efficient catalytic processes to convert methane into useful petrochemical feedstocks depends upon developing new coupling processes that use abundant, thermodynamically mild oxidants together with selective catalysts. Sulfur as a selective “soft” oxidant for catalytic methane conversion probed by experiment and theory.

Amminex City-SCR upgrade delivers gaseous ammonia for improved SCR conversion of NOx; avoiding high off-cycle emissions

Green Car Congress

The technical reason for these high “off-cycle” NO x emissions is poor NO x conversion efficiency of installed SCR systems when exhaust temperature is low. Urea-driven SCR system use exhaust heat to convert the urea solution to ammonia, which then reduces the NO x. At low exhaust temperatures, catalyst activity also falls off sharply.
