Registrations of alternatively fuelled cars in the UK doubled in the first six months of 2010 compared with the first half of 2009, the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show. As part of a newly released Clean Mobility package, the European Commission is proposing a 30% reduction in average CO 2 emissions for new cars and vans from 2021 to 2030. EU sales of new passenger cars relative to global sales have decreased from 34% before the financial crisis (2008/2009) to 20% today.

Discounts on company car taxation for hybrid and alternative fuel vehicles will be scrapped under new tax terms revealed as part of yesterday’s Budget. The changes will affect the most polluting hybrids such as the Lexus RX 400H and biofuel ready cars such as the Saab 9-5 Biopower.
