The first batteries could power vehicles to “neck-breaking” speeds of up to 14 mph. There were no recharging stations, so batteries needed to be replaced much more often. Li-ion batteries have been around since 1991, but only in 2008 were applied to cars. In 2008, the Tesla Roadster hit the road, ushering in a new era for EVs.

Since the launch on 26 March, Tesla Motors has taken 520 reservations for the Model S, an all-electric family sedan that carries up to seven people and travels up to 300 miles per charge.
