New catalysts enable photocatalytic version of water gas shift reaction for H2 production

Politécnica de Valencia (Spain) have found that noble metal nanoparticles supported on titanium dioxide or cerium dioxide can catalyze the industrially important water gas shift (WGS) reaction for hydrogen production at ambient temperatures using visible light irradiation. As far as we know there are no precedents on the photocatalytic WGS.

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) announced that greenhouse gas emissions in California in 2016 fell below 1990 levels for the first time since emissions peaked in 2004—a reduction roughly equivalent to taking 12 million cars off the road or saving 6 billion gallons of gasoline a year.

The US Department of Energy (DOE), Natural Resources Canada and the Mexican Ministry of Energy have released the first-ever atlas mapping the potential carbon dioxide storage capacity in North America. The North American Carbon Atlas Partnership was formed under the North American Energy Working Group in 2001.

USGS/BOEM study identifies method to differentiate between natural seepage and produced oils in waters off Southern California

Resource managers now have a method to determine the source of oil found in the waters off Southern California and differentiate between naturally seeped oils and those produced by offshore oil and gas production. Other platform oils need to go through a more extensive biomarker analysis to distinguish them from natural seepage.

The power generated by the Rialto Project is expected to qualify under California’s Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) program, which requires utilities to increase the amount of electric power they sell from qualified renewable-energy resources. Biomass is mixed with hot sand (1,800 ºF), turning it into product gas and residual char.

The findings cast doubt on whether biofuels produced from corn residue can be used to meet federal mandates for cellulosic biofuels to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 60% compared to gasoline. These emissions add an average of 50–70 g CO 2 per megajoule of biofuel (range 30–90) and are insensitive to the fraction of residue removed.
