New catalysts enable photocatalytic version of water gas shift reaction for H2 production

Green Car Congress

Politécnica de Valencia (Spain) have found that noble metal nanoparticles supported on titanium dioxide or cerium dioxide can catalyze the industrially important water gas shift (WGS) reaction for hydrogen production at ambient temperatures using visible light irradiation. As far as we know there are no precedents on the photocatalytic WGS.

California ARB: GHG emissions fell below 1990 levels for first time in 2016; down 13% from 2004 peak; transportation emissions up 2%

Green Car Congress

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) announced that greenhouse gas emissions in California in 2016 fell below 1990 levels for the first time since emissions peaked in 2004—a reduction roughly equivalent to taking 12 million cars off the road or saving 6 billion gallons of gasoline a year.

Berkeley Lab releases 8th edition of databook on China’s energy and environment; finding the “missing” energy consumption

Green Car Congress

The China Energy Group of the US Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) recently released the eighth edition of the China Energy Databook —the most comprehensive publicly available resource known to exist covering China’s energy and environmental statistics. US, Canada and Mexico release atlas mapping North American potential CO2 storage capacity; 500 years of geologic storage

Green Car Congress

The US Department of Energy (DOE), Natural Resources Canada and the Mexican Ministry of Energy have released the first-ever atlas mapping the potential carbon dioxide storage capacity in North America. The North American Carbon Atlas Partnership was formed under the North American Energy Working Group in 2001.

Muons and ADNA proposing using accelerator-driven subcritical reactor for heat for production of synthetic fuels and chemicals

Green Car Congress

are proposing using spent nuclear fuel (SNF), natural uranium, or excess weapons-grade plutonium (W-Pu) in a proposed GEM*STAR accelerator-driven subcritical reactor (ADSR) to provide the process heat and steam for the Fischer-Tropsch production of synthetic diesel from natural gas and other carbonaceous feedstocks (e.g., biomass or coal).

Researchers Propose Solar-Driven Biomass Gasification Pathway for Synthetic Fuel Production

Green Car Congress

Hydrogen for reverse water gas shift reaction to avoid producing CO 2 during the process is produced by electrolyzing water, driven by solar power. For comparison, they also modeled the production of methanol using only biomass as a fuel and also using coal as source of both carbon and energy. Total cost estimate (2001$/GJ), inc.

USGS/BOEM study identifies method to differentiate between natural seepage and produced oils in waters off Southern California

Green Car Congress

Resource managers now have a method to determine the source of oil found in the waters off Southern California and differentiate between naturally seeped oils and those produced by offshore oil and gas production. Other platform oils need to go through a more extensive biomarker analysis to distinguish them from natural seepage.
