The 2008 Toyota Prius is 242 g/mi today. If FCVs are to be better than a Prius, the hydrogen must be produced from renewable energy. California’s own Hydrogen Highway Blueprint Plan estimates that hydrogen FCVs will require more than 4000 BTU/mi (1172 Watt hours per mile) of renewable energy.

After facing some questionable criticism about its manufacturing processes and how green the Toyota Prius really is, the Japanese manufacturer has hit back with a Press release highlighting its environmentally focused manufacturing. It suggests that the Prius is a standard bearer for clean operations and the use of renewable energy sources.

Initially it’s a lot like driving a Toyota Prius hybrid… until the straightaway, where Dean persuades me to floor it. The ideal car battery would have a long range, and minimal residual waste at the end of its useful life. Nissan expects the Leaf to be the first affordable, all-electric car.
