UF/IFAS researchers develop new sorghum cultivars that could produce up 10.5 kL ethanol per hectare

Green Car Congress

Researchers from the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) have found that three UF/IFAS-developed sorghum varieties could produce up to 10,500 liters of ethanol per hectare (about 1,100 gallons US per acre). Castro is now a researcher at the University of Jaén in Spain. —Castro et al.

Tsinghua Researchers Find that Sugarcane Juice is a Good Fermentation Feedstock for Algal Biodiesel

Green Car Congress

Researchers at Tsinghua University in China have shown that sugarcane juice is a good feedstock for biodiesel production, when used to support the growth of the alga Chlorella protothecoides by heterotrophic fermentation. However, both biomass productivity and oil content of photoautotrophic cultures can be low.

Scientists engineer sugarcane to produce lipids for biodiesel, more sugar for ethanol; ARPA-E project PETROSS

Green Car Congress

A multi-institutional team led by the University of Illinois has genetically engineered sugarcane to produce lipids in its leaves and stems for biodiesel production (lipid-cane). Surprisingly, the modified sugarcane plants also produced more sugar, which could be used for ethanol production. Grennan (University of Illinois).

Study Suggests That Use of Land-Efficient Animal Feed Technologies and Double Cropping Could Reconcile Large-Scale Biofuel Production With Food Production

Green Car Congress

Annual mass flows from the current allocation of 114 million ha (left) versus a land efficient allocation (right) showing all major crops and outputs for the maximum ethanol production scenario. If so, then integrating biofuel production with animal feed production may also be a pathway available to many other countries.
