The Honda Insight, launched this month, is outselling its competitors in the hybrid market. Since going on sale on 4 April, 229 Insights have been sold in the UK, ahead of its nearest rival the Toyota Prius (198 units). Honda expects to sell around 7,000 Insights in the UK this year.

And with poor sales and Toyota's Prius C now on the market as a head-to-head rival, the Honda Insight can definitely consider itself a follower. That's a shame, for those who remember the original Honda Insight. Some lead, others follow.

The Toyota Prius has come a long way since hitting the market over a decade ago. Back then, at the turn of the 21st century, it was no more than a fuel efficient but ultimately unappealing curio, bought only by a select few.

The Toyota Prius is the best-selling hybrid vehicle of all time and recently passed three million sales globally and a million in the U.S., So then, why hasn't it for the Honda Insight? over more than a decade. And when fuel prices rise, so has demand for the Prius and other high-mileage vehicles.
