Honda, however, reported a decrease in hybrid sales of 22.2% Overall, Toyota reported an increase in total light duty vehicle sales of 40.7% on a volume basis; Ford saw its sales jump 42.7%; and Honda reported an increase of 22.5%. According to Autodata, total light-duty vehicle sales in the US grew 24.3% to 1,652 units.

Reported hybrid sales include those from Toyota, Ford, Honda, GM and Nissan; Mercedes-Benz is not breaking out sales of its new S400 Hybrid. US sales of hybrids in March 2009 as reported by the automakers dropped 44% by volume year-on-year to 21,433 units; that performance was worse than the total light duty vehicle market, which posted a 36.8% Hybrid sales as a percentage of total light duty vehicle sales by automaker. Nissan posted 834 units of the Altima Hybrid, a 0.2%

In the aftermath of the summer sales boom fueled by the US Cash for Clunkers program, September 2009 light duty vehicles sales dropped back to pre-incentive lows. With 745,997 cars and light duty trucks sold in September, according to Autodata, sales were down 22.7% to 152 units, but the new Honda Insight posted 1,746 units.
