It’s now what’s know as an orphan car—no longer in production as GM moves to full electrics. Electric-only range of the Volt has not only not diminished , but I’m regularly see 60-mile estimated ranges after a charge. Due to the pandemic my mileage has dropped dramatically, but I’ve been able to keep my EV miles at a high level.

Even at around $30k, that’s a game-changing price for a crossover EV, and GM stuck to that price point over the next two years as we learned more about the Equinox, including pictures of its two-toned exterior. Plus, the Equinox offers 319 miles of range. For comparison, the eAWD trims offer an estimated 285 miles of range.

The stated goal is to experiment in autonomous on-demand vehicles, hedging the reduction in vehicle sales caused by ride sharing by making GM the preferred vehicle provider for Lyft drivers and integrating connectivity tools like OnStar. This new company, Bright Automotive , is founded by ex-GM EV1 people, and the super efficient Rocky Mountain Institute to make plug-in hybrids in Indiana. However, because of the duty cycle used by the Postal Service, which generally amounts to only about 18-20 miles per day on a fixed route, these vehicles are being built without the range extender seen on the concept. Thats such a pretty metallic blue; I would love to see these postal vehicles around my neighborhood. Looks sharp.

Although charging infrastructure is beginning to find its way into cities, it may be awhile until they are available in residential neighborhoods en masse. BYD , for examples, says their 60 mile range-extended vehicle can add 30 miles of range in ten minutes. every 40 miles or so. Still, swapping need only be an option.
