The other two short-listed finalists in contention for the award were the Mercedes-Benz S 500 Plug-In Hybrid and the Volkswagen Golf GTE. The BMW i8 is the first plug-in hybrid vehicle manufactured by the BMW Group.

I wish the thing was for sale as-is. and 49 mpg. Well they did give brief bursts of acceleration through the parking lot to show that it does have some Roadster goodness to it. But yes, there was no slalom to see how it handles the twisties. It is probably a real rocket compared to the Daimler version that will eventually show up.
