The advanced technology vehicle would have an extended driving range on battery power and would also have a diesel or gasoline engine that could power the car when the battery was low, the Detroit News said, citing unnamed GM officials. This year, it has also drawn sharp criticism for its decision to kill its EV1 electric car program.

The idea is that it could theoretically be used for on-the-go recharging, alongside a grid recharge at night. Inductive charging has already been used on a number of earlier electric vehicles including the Nissan Hypermini and GM’s EV1. It is exploring scaling up the concept for use with its electric car.

This new company, Bright Automotive , is founded by ex-GM EV1 people, and the super efficient Rocky Mountain Institute to make plug-in hybrids in Indiana. Waters worked on the battery for the General Motors EV1 and also worked at Ener1, which makes lithium-ion batteries. But it does have experience on its side.

The biggest obstacle for those who would prefer an alternative has been lack of purchasable plug-in electric vehicles since 2003 when auto manufacturers ceased production of plug-in EVs like the GM EV1, Honda EV Plus, and Toyota RAV4-EV. The rechargeable battery is made up of 5,088 cells grouped into 48 modules.
