They knew about hybrids and after a couple of times riding in our Prius, they decided to pull the trigger on two 2006s with 180k km (112k miles). What is it like to drive a hybrid? We only drove ’normal’ ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) cars before but those gave me a feeling of always being in a hurry. Especially in the city.

Much earlier in the chapter’s history, member Otmar Ebenhoech, who would go on to create the Villa DC Motor Controller, made a strong impression on the DIY community using DC motors. Chapter member Ian Wright cofounded Tesla then later founded Wrightspeed, a company that built large hybrid trucks in San Jose. Then we disbanded.

Lotus Engineering and Harmon International, two heavyweights in their respective industries, have teamed up to create a new technology known as Electronic Sound Synthesis (ESS). This is especially important for electric and hybrid vehicles which can be difficult to hear at lower speeds due to their drive mechanism.

Paradox 1 - Soot: There's an apparent emissions paradox with plug-in hybrids (PHEV): Driving longer distances on battery power means more cold starts as the internal combustion engine (ICE) stops and starts up again after the batteries deplete. Third-party and DIY converters can't muck with every system on a car.
