Even after lubricating the seal and the surrounding hole with oil, I still had to use the throwout tube and a large hammer just to get it in. With the front seal back in place, I added the rear gaskets, wetted them with transmission oil and installed the intermediate plate with gear shafts. I didn't even get it flush.

The only minor things left to fix are the accessory lights for the clock and oil-pressure guage and getting the clock working again. I'm going to start commuting to work with the 914 to get used to the vehicle's capability and have some fun while it's still has the range of a gasoline car.

After attaching all the wires and chassis ground in the front luggage rack, the green oil light comes on (and the annoying seat-belt buzzer) when I insert the key and turn it to the "on" position. You can definitely test the green oil light, but don't short out any terminals as mentioned in step XXVI.G!! The moment of truth!

The transmission off to the right has a fresh load of oil in it and I look forward to seeing if I have any major leaks over the next few days. I swept the garage and put away all the tools, wood pieces and garbage so that there would be space to work in. The garage, somewhat clean again.

I also drained all the engine oil and transmission fluid. The shift linkage was especially hard because it moved around so much. My friend John (above) held the shift lever still while I yanked out the linkage earlier today. My buddy Pete is providing some 2x4s later today to hold up the car so I can drop the engine this week.

Note: Ross Cunniff is burning the midnight oil over at [link] to try and get his 914 AC done this weekend. This plug also had a hex head on it (instead of a hex depression) which makes it much easier to unscrew when you need to replace the transmission fluid. I think I'll keep it.

The green/red-stripe wire turns on the oil-pressure light in the cabin. Here's the main wiring loom with several of the key wires separated out to the left. The black wire is the 12V switched line from the ignition. The two grey/red-stripe wires drive the backup lights.

My friend wisely pointed out to me that ABS plastic decays quickly in directly sunlight, so I'll probably end up spray painting the surface with an oil-base black paint to prevent the plastic from degrading.

Next up was tying the READY and FAULT output lines into the green oil light indicator and red generator light indicator. I had to adjust the EE1SpeedoDiv parameter inside the DMOC so that the tachometer matched the ISR2Hertz RPM value shown on the laptop. My calibration value for EE1SpeedDiv was 70, but that might vary with different gauges.

The green/red wire drives the oil pressure light and will be tied to chassis ground on a bolt, so we use a closed terminal. Here's the main wiring loom with the important wires sticking out and crimped. The remaining wires are folded back on the loom and taped in place with red electrical tape.
