I broke 2000 miles with the 914 EV this week. You'll also notice that the "steady-state" voltage at the end of the chart is lower than at the beginning, showing that the pack has gone through some discharge during the 15-mile commute. The car has been running smoothly with no complaints. I'm getting more involved with the OEVA club.

After doing some research, I found Electro Automotive out of Felton, CA and put down the $13,000 for one of their latest AC motor conversion kits for the Porsche 914.

Two quick updates for the 914 EV since I've started working on the Civic-EV: First, I just passed 6000 EV miles and the car is still going strong. Second, the PakTrakr system has been acting up and reporting battery failures. At first, this really worried me that my battery pack wasn't doing well.

This averages out to around 205 Watt-Hours per mile. In the meantime, I took some approximate readings from my ammeter and voltmeter as I drove on flat roads this past week. Overall driving at 20mph tends to pull 30 amps at 140 volts. Driving at 60mph (flat road only) pulls 90 amps at 135 volts.

I think my battery pack is dead after 8600 miles and 1.5 If my average trip is 20 miles between charges and I have 8600 miles on the car, that means about 430 half-cycles. My Zivan charger alarm has gone off for the past week and I finally looked into it.

Despite the issues with the car, I've decided to start commuting 15 miles each way to work to see how the car does. By not revving the motor above 5000RPM, I can minimize the vibration problem. The batteries are starting to break in. I'm getting slightly more power on the freeway now and starting from a dead stop is acceptable.

I've only had 50 millivolts of difference between the highest and lowest voltages when I get home from work after 16 miles of driving, so I think the pack is still doing okay. It turns out that the Zivan charger is doing a reasonable job of over-charging the flooded batteries to keep them balanced.

The KillaCycle ended up posting a run on Friday of 152mph in the quarter mile. Here's the famous KillaCycle powered by just under 1000 A123 batteries, the same kind that go into the DeWalt cordless drills. They will try again tonight to go faster. Since the stranded EV was only 2 1/2 miles away, I walked back to the ICE car and drove it home too. Just before noon, I drove with the ICE vehicle over to the 914, charged the accessory battery with jumper cables for about 20 minutes, then quickly drove the 914 back home to the garage for repairs.
