The motor and controller from Electro Automotive (sent from Azure Dynamics) arrived on November 20th and are now sitting in my living room awaiting the remainder of the kit parts. Due to the high demand for kits resulting from the movie Who Killed the Electric Car , Electro Auto has been completely swamped.

The instructions for the AC kit tell you to slide the motor speed control box through the two-inch hole that was cut in the wall between the engine compartment and the rear luggage compartment. In my haste, I added a computer grommet to the hole which made it just a bit too small to slide the motor control box through.

EVParts.com sells it as a DC-DC converter for many of their electric vehicle conversion kits. It's a bit larger than the CCPower C400 DC-DC converter supplied with the kit, but it still fits in the same space and can be plugged into a 115V AC outlet for charging the accessory battery offline.

Over the past few weeks I've been trying to contact the folks at Electro Automotive to get the status of the EV 914 kit. They finally responded last night and apparently they're completely buried under the demand for EV conversion kits. He got one of the earlier DC motor kits for the 914 from Electro Automotive.

Apparently, the AC motor feels like it has more torque at non-zero RPMs (perhaps just a false perception). However, if I start from a stoplight in the same way as a gasoline vehicle (rev the engine and slowly let out the clutch), I can start much more quickly than if I just leave the clutch out and floor the accelerator from a stopped motor.

As you may remember, I received a package from Azure Dynamics several weeks ago with a notice saying that the bolts on their electric motors tend to work their way loose occasionally. They provided an upgrade kit with lock washers and loctite to remedy the problem. Here's the back end of the transmission/motor.

One of the annoying behaviors of the motor system in my AC 914 kit is that the default DMOC445 parameters causes the acceleration and braking to have oscillations. He graciously faxed me a circuit to generate a tach pulse from an ADC8" or 9" motor, but he didn't really understand the circuit. Unfortunately, the circuit relies on the fan inside the motor interrupting an optical emitter-receiver pair which doesn't exist on the AC24 motor in my vehicle.

I received a package from Azure Dynamics yesterday with a field upgrade to the bolts on the AC24 motor for the EV kit. With the electric motor mounted in the car, I can't perform the upgrade because the bolts won't slide out. Update: DOH!

This was originally just a human powered vehicle made in Belgium, but the owner added an electric motor to power the rear third wheel to get up the hills in Portland (of which there aren't many in Belgium). They run on 48 volts and the company sells them as a kit for about $3500. Not bad for something that has a top speed of 50mph.

Here is the mounting place for the motor speed control box that I re-wired yesterday. I've drilled two 1-inch holes in the rear trunk floor to route the high-current battery cables from the PowerPosts shown above to the motor controller. I'm still a cheapskate and will still use the #2 gauge lugs with 5/16" holes provided in the kit.

The working transmission is tied to the motor at left and resonates at 5400 RPM. I wish all the other 914 AC kit owners luck. I wish Ross the best in getting the second 914 AC kit on the road! With the motor/transmission bolted into the chassis and all the mechanical shafts/cables attached, I'm starting the wiring. The fifth wire called for in the AC kit instructions is supposed to be black with a yellow stripe for the rear brake lights. The green/red-stripe wire turns on the oil-pressure light in the cabin.

It turns out that if the voltage coming from my batteries fell into the 136 to 149 volt range (EE2NoAccelBat + EE2AccelRamp = 149), then the controller would linearly limit the power going into the motor down to zero when the voltage reached 136. I recommend this alteration to anyone using this kit!

One of the other 914 kit converters questioned why the accessory battery couldn't stay in the original tray, but I decided to remove it anyway and have the accessory battery up in the front trunk near the DC/DC converter. Here's the battery tray that the directions said to remove. Now, where are those battery boxes from ElectroAuto.

I recently sent off an e-mail to Azure Dynamics, the maker of the DMOC445 AC motor controller in the 914 kit. I asked how I could tap into the motor encoder signals to create an RPM signal for the tachometer on the dashboard. There are also some LED signals that display system status without having to use the serial port.

After receiving an updated.css file (ccShell config file) from Azure Dynamics for the DMOC445, I was able to access the EE1SpeedoDiv variable. Here's the pulse train on the oscilloscope.

I'll have to double check the power spec of the AC24 motor before using this too much. The kit requires the 12V accessory battery to run the exhaust fans while the car charges overnight, so I altered the circuit to use an external 12V laptop supply instead so I wouldn't drain the accessory battery. Okay, enough for today.

I find out this morning from Ross Cunniff (who also recently completed the 914 AC kit), that he has had ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEMS with his CCPower DC-DC converter. Since I finished the first kit, Electro Auto didn't want to replace my unit because they wanted me to find out more information before I simply blew up another one.

Here's the rear battery box which sits over the motor in the engine compartment with the rack on top of it. On minor disappointment is that the cable supplied in the kit is #2 gauge cable. I suppose the AC kit doesn't require as much current as the DC kit, but I'll take all the efficiency I can get at this point.

I must love doing this conversion. I received an updated wiring diagram for the AC kit from ElectroAuto, and, much to my disappointment, many of the connections went between the battery caps. Not long now before we can try to spin the motor! Ugh, I'm dehydrated, exhausted and mad at this inanimate object.

Since this kit is the 914 AC kit, I have no idea how to install the controller plate. This week has been a whirlwind and I haven't caught up on sharing all the pictures.

Today, I installed the last kit piece that I have from Electro Automotive: the motor controller wiring harness. Just for grins, I plugged in the motor position indicator connector and inserted the main motor drive cable into the controller to get an idea what this thing might look like completed.
