The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced two new proposed federal emissions standards spanning light-, medium- and heavy-duty vehicles for model year 2027 and beyond. The light-duty vehicle category includes passenger cars and light trucks consistent with previous EPA criteria pollutant and GHG rules.

The 2022 Fuel Economy Guide, released by ORNL for the DOE/EPA fueleconomy.gov website, provides up-to-date information on fuel economy, environmental and safety data, so consumers can choose the most fuel-efficient vehicle that meets their needs. Four of the models on the guide’s “best in class” list of cars by size are conventionally fueled.

However, Consumer Reports’ engineers cautioned that buyers expecting their car to deliver the EPA’s figure of 47 mpg posted on the window sticker might be disappointed. We’ve found that the EPA tests often exaggerate the fuel-economy of hybrids. Both vehicles scored near the top of their classes in Consumer Reports testing.

Exceeding its initial program targets, the plug-in 2017 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid ( earlier post ) has earned an electric-mode fuel economy rating of 84 miles-per-gallon-equivalent (MPGe) from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). In addition, the EPA gave the all-new minivan a rating of 10 in its Green Vehicle Guide.
