The California South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) has awarded AC Propulsion a $300,000 grant to integrate its electric drive system technology into commercial service vans ( three Ford E250 vans supplied by Comcast) in Southern California. The first conversion vehicle is slated for road testing in early summer 2011.

Southern California Gas Co. SoCalGas) announced that new research on power-to-gas technology shows the technique holds the ability to significantly increase the use of intermittent renewable energy. The finding came out of ongoing research conducted at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) and funded by SoCalGas.

Longer term, California, the Canadian province of Nova Scotia, Japan, and Western Australia are all looking to the sea to help meet their demands for hydrogen. Because there’s no grid connection, the platforms will basically operate as small, isolated power grids and therefore have to handle any sudden surges in power.

California Air Resources Board studies show that battery electric vehicles emit at least 67% lower greenhouse gases than gasoline cars -- even more assuming renewables.
