Check out the new Nissan Leaf on video: You’ve got to love the fact that Nissan had balls and the vision to bank their future on full on electric vehicles, leapfrogging their Japanese competition Honda and Toyota whose timid and safe bet on hybrids has already marked them as bridge technology car makers. Really Ford? Are you kidding me?

BMW M cars – they’re coming with hybrid drivetrains. BYD – Chinese car maker (the name means Build Your Dreams) has huge plans for Australia, including a range of SUVs and a sports sedan. BYD Atto 3 – the car known as the Yuan Plus overseas has been rebranded Atto 3 in Australia. Soon, apparently.

Some think Nissan is taking a gamble by rapidly moving into mass marketing of EVs, comparing the company’s approach to Toyota and Honda’s approach of “wait and see how the market materializes for EVs, then jump in.&# I think it’s Toyota and Honda that are doing the gambling. Production begins in late 2012.

But what did surprise this reporter was the absence of Honda, Toyota, BYD, and a lot of the other players listed on the Plug-In America car tracker. Get to know Coulomb they make the CHARGEPOINT charging stations and they make them good. Their chargers were all over the exhibit floor charging every EV there.

In late 2008, BYD started selling the first production PHEV in China. Honda Sees PHEVs as having "unnecessary fuel engine and fuel tank;" promises all-electrics "assuming we can come up with a really high-performing battery that we are working on currently." BYD also developed the motors and software for the system.
