Washington state has an abundance of power very cheap from all the hydro. We are at the core of the largest vehicle-to-everything MOU, with the Department of Energy, California Energy Commission, National Electrical Contractors, Volvo, BYD. There are some areas of California where you can get really good power access. Tesla’s the best.

With no other changes, its price would rise to ~$54k – unless or until Volvo moves production out of China , something BYD has also considered in order to enter the US market. But with these increased tariffs, that makes it less likely that US consumers will gain access to these cheap, high-tech Chinese EVs.

Tesla’s now-made-in-China Model 3 won the local crown with 140k sales, but the real surprise was the teeny and dirt-cheap WHGMiEV (see the linked story to decipher the acronym), launched only mid-year and reaching 120k, the second Chinese model to score 6 digits in a year. I have no idea. Or have subsidies been cut too quickly?

Some company leadership favors the idea of tariffs , while other ( perhaps more sober ) leaders do not. So in the end, US jobs likely won’t benefit overall , and US consumers will simply be denied a chance to buy cheap new EVs from China – like, for example, the excellent Volvo EX30. But will the tariff change minds?
