The web was buzzing last week with stories about BMW’s MINI E. To recap, BMW will be leasing 500 MINI Es from dealers in New York, New Jersey and Southern California starting some time early in 2009. Those of us familiar with powerful EVs were curious where the drive train for the MINI E originated.

It would have a projected range of 82 miles and would be limited to 62.5 miles per hour. The test fleet is similar to one conducted by rival BMW AG in the past year with Mini Coopers that were outfitted with electric motors. The 450-car Mini E fleet was meant to gather data ahead of the introduction of high-volume cars.

The Pikes Peak AC-180 motor, rated at 268 hp (200 kW) at 6000-7000 rpm and 258 lb-ft (350 N·m) of torque from zero to 5000 rpm, is a high-performance version of the AC Propulsion AC-150 motor found in the BMW MINI E. mile course beginning at the 2,862-meter level.

The BMW Group released the data from the MINI E field trial in the UK. The early findings have already informed the development of the 2011 BMW ActiveE car, a four-seat car based on the BMW 1 Series Coupe, but the biggest beneficiary will be the BMW i3, the first purpose-built EV from the BMW Group, set for launch in 2013.
