All plug-in cars these days come with a 120-volt charge cord. This will actually be sufficient for many if not most Volt drivers, and quite a few LEAF drivers. An empty Volt pack will take 10 hours to fully recharge; an empty LEAF about 20 hours. They’ve kept my LEAF juiced, after all. Cost of upgrade: under $300.

So if you find yourself by Pier 27 in a J1772 compliant or 120 volt-capable electric vehicle and are a Coulomb member or have one of MC's fancy new cards, two spaces with charge stations are available for the parking fee plus an as yet undetermined fee for the electricity. The basic equation governing the charging of batteries is W = V * A, or to put it into words, Watts equals Volts times Amps. You could leave Los Angeles and drive to Baker, stop and have a meal while the car recharges, and have plenty of juice to make it to your hotel in Vegas. You would then have your EV with you for local travel.

Of course, everything has its drawbacks and one problem with charging at home is that it is not an option available for some city dwellers. Although charging infrastructure is beginning to find its way into cities, it may be awhile until they are available in residential neighborhoods en masse. It does not reflect well upon you.

Since rapid charge times come on the condition of available outlets, higher-voltage charging infrastructure would need to be put in place — built over the course of years — to facilitate the charge times some automakers are shooting for. The company says its charge spots would have voltage on par with standard household outlets.
