This has been a point of debate in the auto industry, as many appealed to the government to lower the tax rate for hybrid cars considering they are less polluting than the pure petrol models. Interestingly, Tata is also pushing back against Tesla’s attempt to secure lower taxes for imported electric vehicles.

In May 2008, Toyota saw its Prius hybrid car turn it towards profitability in America and it scrapped plans to build a sport utility truck plant in Tupelo, Mississippi and chose to build a Prius plant there instead. Yet when gas prices tumbled later that year, plans for the Prius plant were shelved.

They were busy promoting their hybrid cars and their favorite distraction tactic - “Hydrogen Cars” While Toyota did very well with the Prius hybrid car, hedging their bets on hybrid cars in the 2020s seems to me that they seem to still live in the 90s. The entire auto industry has given up on investing in Hydrogen cars.

The hundreds of thousands of new cars being added every year to roads in China could further damage already shaky air quality if they are oil-based vehicles. Chinese auto makers also showed other types of "new energy" vehicles, including regular gasoline-electric hybrids to compete with Toyota Motor Corp.s Prius hybrid.
