A new study of the impact of high EV adoption on the Western US power grid by a team from Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) has found that 2028 grid resource adequacy—from generation through transmission—is likely to be sufficient for high EV penetration.

A new Tesla Megapack project has broken ground in Arizona, and when it comes online in 2024, it will be the state’s largest energy storage system. For utilities, battery energy storage is one of the most helpful new technologies they can employ to reduce fossil fuel dependence and increase the reliability of their associated grid.

I went and spoke to their City Council and said “For $50,000 a house I’ll put in solar AND battery systems and take you off the grid. If you’re going to do it, take the homes off the grid. That’s pretty mean to the rest of the grid. THE HOLY GRAIL OF SOLAR: $3 A WATT, CHEAPER THAN COAL. Everything else is wireless.”.
