Underground coal gasification uses paired wells in a coal seam: one an oxidant injection well, the other the syngas producer well. CIRI), an Alaska Native corporation, is proposing an underground coal gasification (UCG) project that would use the resulting syngas to fuel a new 100 MW combined cycle power plant.

A multi-Hubbert analysis of coal production by Tadeusz Patzek at The University of Texas at Austin and Gregory Croft at the University of California, Berkeley concludes that the global peak of coal production from existing coalfields will occur close to the year 2011. The CO 2 emissions from burning this coal will also decline by 50%.

Alaska Native corporation Cook Inlet Region Inc. Laurus Energy have formed Stone Horn Ridge LLC, a company created to commercialize syngas from underground coal gasification (UCG). The Anchorage, Alaska-based joint venture is developing syngas for power generation, synthetic liquid fuels and other industrial applications.

Alaska state senator Lesil McGuire has introduced a bill ( Senate Bill 109 ) that would grant $475 million in state investment tax credits toward development of plants converting natural gas-, coal- or biomass-to-liquids products (GTL, CTL or BTL = xTL) on the state’s North Slope.
