Developing technology to address the causes of climate change, mitigate its impact, and adapt to the crisis is one of IEEE’s top priorities. To assist with that effort, the IEEE Young Professionals group this year launched its Climate and Sustainability Task Force. On 12 September, CSTF and IRENA presented a Youth Day event.

Countries meeting in Durban, South Africa, managed to deliver an agreement after an extension to negotiations. The companies deployed and demonstrated a 150 kW fuel cell system near the 17 th Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change held in Durban, South Africa in late-2011. COP17 was a high-level summit on climate change.

Devastating floods that have killed hundreds of people and displaced tens of thousands more in East Africa are now inundating parts of the Masai Mara, one of Africa’s greatest wildlife national reserves. In total, 179 people have died in Kenya since the flooding begun, and many more have been killed across the whole of East Africa.
