All-in-one solar-powered tower makes carbon-neutral kerosene in the field at pilot-scale

Green Car Congress

We are the first to demonstrate the entire thermochemical process chain from water and CO 2 to kerosene in a fully-integrated solar tower system. Previous attempts to produce aviation fuels through the use of solar energy have mostly been performed in the laboratory. B) Photograph of the solar tower fuel plant during operation.

Osaka team develops new solar-to-hydrogen catalyst that uses broader spectrum of light

Green Car Congress

A team at Osaka University in Japan has developed a new material based on gold and black phosphorus to harvest a broader spectrum of sunlight for water-splitting to produce hydrogen. The band gap properties are promising because of broad solar light absorption from UV to NIR region. More recently, with adjustable band gap from 0.3

SOLETAIR project produces first 200 liters of synthetic fuel from solar power and atmospheric CO2

Green Car Congress

The SOLETAIR project ( earlier post ) has produced its first 200 liters of synthetic fuel from solar energy and the air’s carbon dioxide via Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. The mobile chemical pilot plant produces gasoline, diesel, and kerosene from regenerative hydrogen and carbon dioxide. The SOLETAIR project started in 2016.

NREL researchers capture excess photon energy to produce solar fuels; higher efficiency water-splitting for H2

Green Car Congress

Using quantum dots (QD) and a process called Multiple Exciton Generation (MEG), the NREL researchers were able to push the peak external quantum efficiency for hydrogen generation to 114%. Photogenerated holes oxidize sulfide in one compartment while electrons reduce hydrogen in the other compartment at the dark Pt cathode.
