LLNL 3-D printed biocatalytic polymer turns methane to methanol at room temperature and pressure

Green Car Congress

Using particulate methane monooxygenase (pMMO), the researchers created a biocatalytic polymer material that converts methane to methanol. The enzymes retain up to 100% activity in the polymer construct. Remarkably, the enzymes retain up to 100 percent activity in the polymer. Blanchette et al. Click to enlarge.

The glass transition temperature is the temperature region in which a polymer transitions from a hard, glassy material to a soft, rubbery material. In other words, when the polymer is cooled below the glass transition temperature, it becomes hard and brittle. Their production and disposal is therefore unsustainable in the long term.

HRL Labs team develops 3D printing process for ceramics; propulsion components, microelectromechanical systems and more

Green Car Congress

The extremely high melting point of many ceramics makes them challenging for additive manufacturing as compared with metals or polymers. These polymer structures can then be pyrolyzed to a ceramic with uniform shrinkage and virtually no porosity. Additive manufacturing of polymer-derived ceramics. (A) H) Honeycomb.
