Hyundai Motor Company unveiled the 2.4 Theta II GDI, its first Gasoline Direct Injection engine before an audience of engineers attending the Ninth Annual Hyundai-Kia International Powertrain Conference in Korea. GDI application will subsequently be expanded across the gasoline engine family and applied to other Hyundai models.

These research and development efforts have helped reduce automotive fuel cell costs by more than 35% since 2008 and by more than 80% since 2002. At the same time, fuel cell durability has doubled and the amount of expensive platinum needed in fuel cells has fallen by 80% since 2005.

SK Energy is Asia’s fourth largest energy provider, and was Korea’s first oil refining company, now with a domestic market share of 38%. The company was the first Korean company, and the third in the world, to independently develop a lithium-ion battery separator, which features proprietary technology for low shrinkage and heat resistance.

The tide has turned in the electrification of the German auto market, with plugin electric vehicles taking the majority of sales for the first time in December. Plugins took 55.4% of the month’s passenger auto sales, with full electrics taking a third (33.2%), and plugin hybrids taking over a fifth (22.2%).

Germany’s plugin electric vehicle share broke new records in November, gaining 39.4% of the auto market, up from 34.4%, year on year. Overall auto volumes were 260,512 units, up some 31% YoY, though still down around 10% from pre-2020 seasonal norms. The Tesla Model 3 was the bestselling full electric.

Germany, Europe’s largest auto market, saw plugin electric vehicles take 32.2% share in September, up from 28.7% year on year. Full electrics grew more than plugin hybrids. Overall auto volume was 224,864 units, up 14% from last year, and down some 8% from September 2019’s result.
