The California Energy Commission approved $8 million in grants to two biofuel companies stemming from a solicitation issued earlier this year (PON-13-609: Pilot-Scale and Commercial-Scale Advanced Biofuels Production Facilities). The US State Department has issued a Presidential Permit to Enbridge Energy, Limited Partnership to enable construction of the Alberta Clipper pipeline for the transport of crude oil from the Canadian oil sands to US refineries. This week, the RFA happened to issue two pieces, each touching on the impact of oil sands production.

The US Department of State (DOS) has released its Draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (SEIS) in response to TransCanada’s May 2012 application for the Keystone XL pipeline that would run from Canada’s oils sands in Alberta to Nebraska. The pipeline would primarily transport crude oil from the WCSB and Bakken regions.

The State Department said it expects to make a decision on whether to grant or deny the permit before the end of the year, but will not make a decision until it has completed this process.

The company’s prototype pyrolysis system ( earlier post ) can be tailored to the amount of feedstock available and thus can be deployed in close proximity to stands of beetle-killed timber. All grants are awarded over a period of five years, with continued funding contingent on annual project success.

In September, Gevo received a $5-million grant from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) for the development of biojet fuel from woody biomass and forest product residues. The new FAA contract with UOP supports US government efforts to identify and accelerate the commercial availability of next-generation, non-fossil jet fuel.
