The funding will help Sierra Energy further develop and commercialize its FastOx gasification technology, which converts virtually any waste into clean, renewable energy and fuels without burning. Waste is fed into the top of the gasifier vessel through an airlock. Purified oxygen and steam are injected into the base.

The California Air Resource Board (CARB) is awarding $7 million to CALSTART to develop a Class 8 truck that will achieve a 90% reduction in NO x along with a 15-20% fuel efficiency improvement. The unique mineral— jadarite —was discovered by Rio Tinto geologists in 2004 near the city of Loznica in Western Serbia. In parallel, Rio Tinto has also started work on the commissioning of its lithium demonstration plant in the United States, which is extracting lithium from waste rock at its Boron mine in California.
