As Toyota learned with the introduction of the Prius and its efforts on the 2002 RAV4 EV, O’Brien said, it is difficult to force technology adoption by consumers. Inductive charging with a paddle-type connector was used in a number of earlier EVs, notably GM’s EV1, the Nissan Hypermini EV, and the Toyota RAV4. Subsequently, GM suspended production of its Gen2+ MagneCharge units in 2002. The two coils must be very close together, but do not make direct electrical contact.
