The BMW Group further expanded its R&D footprint in China with the opening of a new R&D Center in Shanghai. China is already home to BMW Group’s largest R&D system outside of Germany, with locations in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenyang and Nanjing. China is the place to be. The locally produced BMW i5, will be unveiled this year.

The FT-CH concept. Toyota Motor Sales (TMS) USA unveiled the FT-CH dedicated hybrid concept at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit. However, at the time, the market, the consumer and consumer’s environmental mind-set were not ready to buy-in to the whole battery-electric concept.

The Tesla Roadster represents the evolution of AC Propulsion’s 12 year old tzero which in 2002 pioneered the use of lithium-ion batteries (6,800 cells) demonstrating 0-60mph acceleration times in the 3.6 The BMW Group aims to start series production of all-electric vehicles over the medium term as part of its Number ONE strategy.

It has pushed several hybrid cars in the USA including the Camry Hybrid and Highlander Hybrid, and a number of luxury hybrid vehicles through its Lexus brand. It also plans to introduce the CR-Z (see article ), which has been dubbed the world’s first hybrid sports car; a hybrid version of the Fit; and both the EV-N and Skydeck concepts.
