Volkswagen has reopened its Dresden Transparent Factory (Gläserne Manufaktur) as a new Volkswagen brand showcase for electromobility and digitalization; the site had closed for 10 days to carry out the necessary modifications for around 50 interactive exhibits and vehicles allowing visitors to experience future mobility first-hand.

A new white paper published by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) comparing official and “real-world” fuel consumption and CO 2 emission values for passenger cars in Europe and the United States shows that the average discrepancy between the values in Europe increased from less than 10% in 2001 to 25% in 2011.

Simulations of future vehicles under the footprint-based standards found that the sales-weighted average vehicle size increases by 2–32%, undermining gains in fuel economy by 1–4 mpg (0.6–1.7 carefully analyzed in all future rulemakings to inform the specific policy design. In 2011, Volvo announced it would build its own technological future based on two in-house developed strategies: a scalable vehicle architecture (SPA); and a new engine range consisting solely of four-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines (Volvo Engine Architecture, VEA4). L/100km (29 mpg US) on the European cycle, for 186 g CO 2 /km.
