The US Department of Energy (DOE) is proposing a significant revision in its procedures for calculating a value for the petroleum-equivalent fuel economy of EVs for use in the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) program administered by the Department of Transportation (DOT). DOE published a final rule on 12 June 2000.

Because of the pandemic, there was a substantial reduction in 2020 in vehicle miles traveled. Overall , vehicle miles traveled in 2020 were down 13% compared with 2019. Not coincidentally, the first Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards for new cars and light trucks became effective with 1978 model-year vehicles.
