The project is led by Argonne; Maxwell Technologies Inc. Results of an earlier simulation study of capacitor sizing for the system shows that a 75-100 Whr capacitor bank is appropriate for a Saturn VUE-sized PHEV. GM has verbally committed to apply this technology on the Chevy Volt energy storage system and to perform lab evaluations.

Wagoner said GM is using the Saturn Vue hybrid sport utility vehicle to develop a plug-in hybrid, which can be re-charged from a standard electrical outlet, and will offer biofuel-capable Hummer SUVs. Wagoner said GM's prior work on its now-defunct EV1 electric car gives it a good base for the battery technology needed.
