Under the contract, Bright Automotive’s eSolutions team ( earlier post ) will retrofit a standard USPS Long Life Vehicle (LLV) with an integrated electric drive train, and place the vehicle in real-world service for one year in the Washington DC area. The IDEA, Bright noted, is now scheduled for production in 2013.

Probably the most needed and least controversial proposed change is the elimination of the phaseout of the tax cap that begins in the quarter after a manufacturer sells 200,000 BEVs or PHEVs in the US. But all of these PHEVs have batteries of around 9 kWh and so they could easily be upgraded to 10 kWh to qualify for the tax credit.

The plug-in Priuses are almost doubling the fuel efficiency of Google standard Prius fleet, getting 74 MPG rather than 41 MPG. That's great, but because most driving down Silicon Valley way is on the freeway for rather short distances, the plug-ins don’t do much all-electric driving and the MPG isn't approaching the much touted 100MPG.

Plug-ins would simple be either pure EVs or PHEVs, and hopefully tapping into homegrown American electrons for the drive to have America energy independence once again. This Educational Tour will be in, as mentioned, the All American "Spirit of DC" - Toyota Prius PHEV, which has been demonstrating the goal of 101 MPG, assisted by electricity.
